The Power of Observation

How we observe the world–what we see and what we do not see–shapes everything we think and do.

When we talk about seeing, of course, we’re not just talking about our visual engagement with the world. Seeing also involves a broader awareness of the world. In this broader sense, observation refers to the whole way that we apprehend the world.

It’s what we see, but also what we hear and feel, what we smell and taste. It’s what we bring to our life: memories, beliefs, models, hopes and fears, expectations and doubts.

We often think of seeing as automatic and reliable, like a video recorder that captures all of the details of our 360-degree reality.

In fact, seeing requires incredible effort. Luckily, we all have an innate curiosity and creativity. And when we tap into the power of the arts, we can train ourselves to see more and connect better with others.

In this module, we will do just that.

As you explore your Powers of Observation, you can read the micro lessons in the order presented or skip around. Go at your own pace – read them in one sitting or explore one a day. Work alone or join a group of peers in your cohort.

Along the way, be sure to take advantage of the readings, videos, and activities that are scattered throughout the module.
